Today, members of the Congress of South African Trade Unions (COSATU) embarked on a nation wide protest against the rising food, electricity and fuel prices. Unions and civil society organisations organised 18 marches in all nine provinces.

The South African Democratic Teachers Union (SADTU), along with other trade unions, took to the streets across the country, where they participated in marches.

“Teachers, just like other workers are affected by the high prices of food and electricity. They will be joining the strike with the members of Cosatu to demand for the low prices of basic foods and petrol and all other things,” said Thobile Ntola, SADTU Deputy President.

With 235,000 SADTU is the largest union in the public service. It’s members represents two-thirds of teachers in the country.

Cosatu says that they will again take strike action until government responds to their demands.
