The South African police service and NSRI were alerted of a man reported to have jumped off a ship berthed in the Port of Table Bay. The 23 year old Tanzanian man was in the harbour water holding onto a ring life-buoy that the ships crew had thrown to the man and he was floating. The Police diver who was on duty at the time, Inspector JT Potgieter, dived in to rescue the man.

The man was taken to hospital by ER-24 ambulance. He was said to be in a stable condition but will be treated for hypothermia. According to the ships crew the man was discovered allegedly hiding on-board their cargo ship, which was loading in port, and after the ships crew confronted the man he apparently leapt overboard.

Police are in the process of investigating the mans intentions. Reports of a second unauthorized man believed to have also been discovered on-board by the ships crew.
The name of the vessel and it’s estimated departure time and next port of call were not determined by the NSRI.
