There has been a slight decrease in the number of fatal drownings over the peak festive season, compared to last year. Accroding to the City of Cape Town, of the nine fatal drownings since the start of the season in September 2024, four occurred in December, compared to five the previous December.  No fatal drowning incidents were recorded at the  public swimming pools across the Cape metro.

The municipality has raised concern about the number of child drownings. Mayco member for Community Services & Health, Patricia van der Ross, said the majority of those who drowned were male, and the youngest patient was just nine years old.

‘’We are alarmed by the number of young children who have drowned this season. Last season, no fatalities younger than 16 were recorded. An analysis of incidents this season shows that all but one happened either outside of designated bathing areas or outside of lifeguard duty hours. Our lifeguards have also responded to more than 30 non-fatal drownings, all of which were serious and where patients required anything from oxygen to hospitalisation. Without the intervention of lifeguards, these too could have been fatal.’’

‘’I want to commend the staff for their amazing efforts to keep beachgoers safe, despite ongoing challenges like alcohol abuse, patrons not adhering to instructions, and other anti-social behaviour,’’ she added.

The Community, Arts & Culture Development Department's Identikidz project, meanwhile, continues to grow in popularity. The number of children tagged increased by nearly 4 000, from 85 916 to 89 689, compared with the previous festive season. Two hundred and fifty-six children were reunited with their families – 11 children were handed over to the Provincial Department of Social Development on New Year's Day, as their caregivers were not contactable.

The Identikidz project will conclude on 12 January 2025.

The annual Cape Town Street Parade or Tweede Nuwe Jaar parade occurs on Saturday, as 2 January coincided with the start of Jumu’ah, when Muslims go to the mosque to pray.

The parade is a cultural event that has its roots in the early days of colonisation and slavery in the Cape. Slaves were brought to Cape Town from various parts of the world, including Africa, India, Indonesia, and the Middle East. Many of these slaves spoke different languages and had little in common except for their shared experience of slavery. However, during New Year’s, they were given the chance to celebrate alongside the colonists.

According to the City of Cape Town, the street parade will see over 20 000 performers from 18 minstrel troupes parade through Cape Town’s CBD.

The parade will start in District Six and the Klopse will make their way to Rose Street in Bo-Kaap. Spectators can expect dazzling costumes, energetic ghoema music, and a jubilant atmosphere.

‘’This is always a special time for thousands of our residents who get the opportunity to celebrate and honour longstanding traditions that form part of the fabric of this great city. As the City of Cape Town, we are proud to collaborate with the Cape Malay Choir Board and the Kaapse Klopse Karnival Association by providing financial and logistical support to ensure we continue to honour these traditions for many more years to come. The City has worked diligently with the organisations and other roleplayers to put measures in place to ensure roads are clear for the troupes, and for the spectators to enjoy the festivities in a safe and family-friendly environment,’’ said JP Smith, Mayoral Committee Member for Safety and Security.

The parade takes place between 11am and 10p.m  The season goes on into February, with the competitions taking place very Saturday until 1 February 2025. During these competitions troupes compete in various categories. Categories include Senior Drum Major, Juvenile Drum Major, Best Dressed Troupe, Klopse Jol, and Grand March Pass.

More than 1 400 babies born in SA on New Year's Day

The National Department of Health has released the final tally of New Year’s baby. A total number of 1 448 births were recorded on the first day of the 2025 year, at South Africa’s public health facilities

In a statement, the department said this is a decline compared to the 1 703 deliveries recorded in 2024

Alarmingly is the number of young and underage numbers. The number of teen mothers has decreased from 190 recorded in 2024, to just over 80 recorded in 2025. The department called on all sectors of society, especially families, to join hands with government and other non-governmental organisations to address teenage pregnancy.

“Teenage pregnancy often leads to irregular school attendance, poor performance and ultimately school dropout, especially for mothers who lack family support structures to take care of the babies when the mothers go to school,’’ said Foster Mohale, departmental spokesperson.

“The Department of Health, working together with sister Departments of Social Development and Basic Education, will continue to support all mothers through existing programmes to ensure their babies survive and thrive,” he added.

Gauteng recorded the highest number of births with 387, followed by Eastern Cape (219) and Limpopo (191).

The Western Cape recorded 101 births, with 58 being boys and 43 girls. The first baby of the year in the province was a baby girl was born at George Hospital at exactly 00:07, weighing 2.98 kg, to proud mother Esmerelda Bordtjies. Shortly after, at 00:20, a baby girl was born at Macassar MOU weighing 2.89kg. Third, was a baby boy, born at Ceres Hospital, weighing 4.04 kg.

Groote Schuur Hospital and Tygerberg Hospital, respectively, welcomed two sets of twins.

MEC Mireille Wenger extended her congratulations, saying:

"The birth of a child is a moment of great joy and hope, symbolising new beginnings. We celebrate with families welcoming their little ones today and urge parents to access the support available to them through our clinics. Together, we can ensure every child starts life with the care they deserve. It was such a joy to be part of welcoming the first baby born in the metro at Tygerberg Hospital this morning. I’m so happy to see that both mom and baby are doing great, and it’s a wonderful way to start the new year. Our amazing staff brought smiles to so many families today and we are all grateful for their work to support each and every patient. Their unwavering dedication has made these safe deliveries possible. Thank you to our healthcare workers for being the backbone of our health system."
