After months of heated public debate, delays and threats, the construction of Green Point Stadium for the 2010 Soccer world cup has begun.
Construction crews have begun removing and conserving the turf and some of the grass will be replanted in parks throughout Cape Town. The rest will be sold.
According to a weekend paper, Pieter Cronje, 2010 spokesperson for the City of Cape Town has said that the stadium is being built on the Metropolitan Golf Course and a portion of the Common.
One phase of the demolition of the existing stadium and provision of bulk services, such as water and electricity has formed part of the construction.
Reports stated that Cronje said the City has taken all opinions in public participation into consideration.
