The National sea Rescue Institute (NSRI) has been activated and the Vodacom Netcare 911 Surf Rescue helicopter to assist police search and rescue on the Umgeni River searching for a drowning victim.
Police had started searching last night after receiving a call that a drowning was in progress on the river. The search had revealed no sign of the victim.
On arrival on-scene an aerial search commenced concentrating on an area amongst reeds on the river bank between the Connaught Bridge and Athlone Bridge in a barely accessible area.
After a short while, the body of a male was spotted from the helicopter. Police divers recovered the body.
The identity of the male has not been determined or where he is from. It is believed he is between the ages of 40 and 45.
