First lady departs for Beijing

First Lady of South Africa Mrs Zanele Mbeki will depart for Beijing today, where she will officially represent South Africa at the 2008 Olympic Games scheduled for 8-24 August in China.

Spokesperson for the President Ronnie Mamoepa said

“Mrs Mbeki will be among other heads of state and governments who will be representing their countries and thus leading their teams respectively to the world’s most beautiful spectacle, The Olympic Games”

This follows South Africa’s decision to respect the right of China to host this year’s Olympics”

Mamoepa added that, “ the government has wished the South African National Olympic team well in its endeavours in Beijing”

“The country expressed its conviction that the team will represent the country with dignity and honour and like all other sporting codes, the team must bring glory to the country and its peoples” Mamoepa concluded.
