A police officer from Steenberg was attacked by angry residents in Mfuleni for allegedly knocking over 2-year old Chante Lakay, while driving his official service van. The girl died shortly after the accident. Police Spokesperson Billy Jones says that the officer is in a stable condition.
“We’ve opened a case of culpable homicide at this point, after the two-year old girl, Chante Lakay was run over by the police patrol van in Mfuleni”.
The driver of the van, a constable who is based at the Steenberg police station was assaulted by members of the community. None of the residents have been arrested following the attack.
“He is currently in a serious but stable condition in hospital,” said Jones.
Police have informed the ICD of the incident and have consulted with them- whether they (the ICD) will take over the investigation. According to Jones, the culpable homicide investigation will still continue.
