The City’s Traffic Services spokesperson, Maxine Bezuidenhout, said no injuries were reported and no passengers were on the bus, at the time of the incident, which was just after 6p.m.

One social media user claims that they saw the MyCiti bus stagnant on Nelson Mandela Boulevard, but not alight.

Bezuidenhout confirmed the incident occurred on Nelson Mandela Boulevard inbound near Searle Street.

Firefighters managed to extinguish the blaze.

A similar incident occurred in January 2023, where a MyCitibus caught alight near Bhunga Avenue. The bus was on its way from Mitchell’s Plain towards the Cape Town Civic Centre station, when passengers alerted the bus driver about smoke at the rear end of the bus. Mayoral Committee member for Urban Mobility, Rob Quintas said at the time, the bus driver pulled over and all evacuated the vehicle safely.
