According to reports, the South African utility Eskom intends to use the full potential of the wind speed in Western Cape- said to be the highest in the country- to develop a long-term solution to the on going energy crisis.

The utility has put out a tender for the development of a commercial 100MW wind energy farm on the West Coast, near Vredendal. Presently Eskom is applying for a licence and carrying out environmental impact assessments. The area surrounding Vrendendal experiences some of the highest wind speeds recorded in the country.

Eskom has been quoted as saying that the area supports other technical requirements for a wind energy facility, in terms of land availability and accessibility to the electricity grid to meet transmission integration requirements.
