Following the arrest of three suspects, who were found to be in possession of an estimated R7,5 million worth of abalone, on November 9, ongoing investigations by police resulted in the arrest of eight more suspects.
Police confiscated 32 700 dried abalone from an empty house on a farm outside Riviersonderend. Police spokesperson Inspector Bernadine Steyn says that the first three arrested suspects appeared in the Caledon Magistrates Court on November 12, but that the case was postponed to next week for a bail application.
“Excellent and persistent investigation led to the arrest of eight more male suspects on Sunday night in Belhar, Caledon, Riviersonderend and Kuils River for Possession of Abalone. They are expected to appear in the Caledon Magistrate's court today,” said Steyn.
