Western Cape Minister of Local Government, Anton Bredell has condemned the actions of Chinese nationals that saw the recent killing of more than 40 rare tortoises for meat in Zimbabwe.
The individuals involved are now facing possible deportation.
The tortoises were captured in South Africa while the Chinese nationals were arrested in Zimbabwe.
Following these arrests, conservation authority, Cape Nature was tipped off that common tortoises are also being targeted for food in the Bredasdorp and Beaufort-West areas.
