Cape
Town ’s iconic Goodhope Centre may disappear
from the City’s landscape in the near future.
City ofCape
Town said that discussions are underway about
the historical structure's sustainability.
Grant Pascoe, mayoral committee member for tourism, marketing and events, said the centre is costing ratepayers a small fortune because of its maintenance as the building is almost four decades old.
He adds that one other option would be to demolish it while on the other hand it is to look at the entire Goodhope Centre grounds and re-develop it; the City is looking at ways to recover some costs because at this stage maintenance of the building has a hefty price tag attached to it.
The Goodhope Centre has been one of the best venues for live music, entertainment, exhibitions conferences and cultural performances.
It has a seating capacity of 7000 and was recently used as a sports arena. The Centre has been a part of Cape TownCBD for around
4O years.
