South African prisoners will be compelled to take part in adult education courses in prison from next year.

The Department of Correctional Services says prisoners will be expected to complete levels 1 to 4 of the adult education programme.

The aim is to ensure that prisoners are active and productive whilst in prison, and better adapted to face the world outside prison when they are released.

Meanwhile other inmates are preparing for their Matric examinations which start next week.
