The Committee Correctional Service on Thursday called on all stake holders in the criminal justice system to work together to eliminate overcrowding in the country’s prisons.

This follows several visits the committee did in the Eastern Cape and KwaZulu Natal to assess correctional centres conditions.

Committee Chairperson Vincent Smith said they asked the judiciary considers non custody sentences of petty crimes.

Smith added that they also asked South Africa Police Service to improve in their detective and investigative work, because this will help to push awaiting trial.
