CONSAWU takes NEDLAC to court

The Confederation of South African Workers Union (CONSAWU) says that after many years of trying to resolve issues with the National Economic Development (NEDLAC) and the Labour Council, they are heading to the Pretoria High Court on Thursday.

CONSAWU says for as long as two years NEDLAC stalled their application for membership of the council.

“We should survive social dialogue in our country, and our demand to be admitted to NEDLAC will rekindle this debate.

Labour movements have in the past showed little concern for the principles of a decent life and decent medical benefits for all, these basic rights have become the privilege of a select few,” says CONSAWU General Secretary Khulile Nkushubana.

The union says through the court they aim contest “inclusive trade union democracy as opposed to exclusive self-serving democracy.”

“It is an embarrassment for CONSAWU to be obliged to take legal action against a labour movement to fight for the rights of its members, simply because other trade unions can exclude those whom they do not like,” says Nkushubana.
Nkushubana added that CONSAWU applied for admission to NEDLAC in 2003 but these requests were continuously blocked.

However the Executive Director of NEDLAC, Herbert Mkhize says that the union’s applications have been rejected but not for all the reasons CONSAWU has stated.

“Yes they are taking us to court, but I can’t discuss the reasons we have rejected their applications prior to our court appearance,” says Mkhize.

The stifeling of Consawu admittance to Nedlac can be seen as an action against the Independent Trade Union Movement. It is very obvious that Labour is being sold out at Nedlac. The labour reps has become fatter cats. E barros (0729525423)
