Early Tuesday morning Bellville police arrested a 42 year-old man after he shot and wounded a police woman near to the police station. According to police spokesperson Elliot Sinyangana, the suspect allegedly had an argument with the victim and tried to force her into his vehicle, which she resisted.
“He fired one gun shot to the right side of the police woman’s shoulder, wounding her in the process. Soon after that, he threw his firearm away and attempted to flee the scene. The police officer was immediately taken to the nearest hospital for immediate medical attention,” explains Sinyangana.
Sinyangana goes on to say that the man was arrested and placed into custody; the firearm was confiscated for further investigation purposes. “It came to light that this man came all the way from Worcester to meet the victim, and the reason for the attack is being investigated.”
The police woman is reported to be in a stable condition.
The man face charges of attempted murder and being in possession of an unlicensed firearm and ammunition. He will appear in the Bellville Magistrates Court on Friday (7 March 2008).
