The South African Municipal Workers Union has welcomed the appointment of both Minister Lechesa Tsenoli and Deputy Minister Andries Nel to the Department of Cooperative Governance and Traditional Affairs.

Samwu’s Tahir Sema said both Minister Tsenoli and Deputy Nel need to be aware of the many challenges that face the local government especially the crisis of accountability, corruption, service delivery and demoralization.

Sema said that they are inviting the Minister and his team to a meeting to brief them on the dire state of local government and they are expected to intervene to ensure that the local government works properly.

“There are also outstanding disputes in the sector and we are expecting them to intervene in these matters urgently,” added Sema.

He also said that if they do not intervene they can expect nation strike action to take place.
