Telkom is reminding customers that the area code of the specific city for landline numbers must be added when the change comes into effect on the 16 of January.
Customers must enter the area code before dialling the seven digit number which will now be ten numbers.
Internet dial-up and security alarms must be reprogrammed to the new Telkom standard before the 16th.
Telkom is urging customers not to wait until the 16th, but start dialling in that manner so that they can get used to the change before the required time.
After the deadline, all calls dialled without the area code will be routed to a standard ‘caller not available’ tone.
Telkom administration nationally will ensure that when making a call, a pre-recorded voice will prompt all users to dial the area code before making their specific call.
