Cape Town police have arrested a suspect believed to have been involved in a number of crimes in the City Bowl.
Police spokesperson Captain Randal Stoffels says that the suspect is believed to have been involved in an armed attack at a Green Point night club last year.
The police caught the man after he allegedly robbed a woman of cellphones and money at gunpoint at San Remo Court in Queen Victoria Street yesterday. He then fled the CBD in a white Golf.
Cape Town Central Patrol spotted him on Eastern Boulevard going in the direction of Mitchell’s Plain. Reports say that the suspect lost control of his vehicle on the N2 near Pinelands and came to a stand-still in the middle of the freeway.
The suspect got out of the vehicle and ran over the freeway, police gave chase and he was caught on the Liesbeeck River bank.
Police could however not find the firearm used to rob the woman, which they believe he ditched on the river bank .
Stoffels says that police continue to search for the firearm. More than 50 rounds of ammunition were found in the vehicle.
The man is expected to appear at the Cape Town magistrate’s court soon.
