The Health Professions Council of South Africa (HPCSA) urges the public at the end of the Eye Care Awareness week to have regular visual and eye tests. By taking the tests, problems can be detected and managed in an early stage.

According to the World Health Organisation, 45 million people are blind and 135 million others are visually impaired world-wide.

The focus of the Eye Care Awareness Week is on children this year. Childhood blindness accounts for one tenth of the prevalence of blindness in adults.

In Africa, 300 000 children are blind but 70 per cent of childhood blindness is preventable.

"Children must have regular eye tests from three to four years of age. Throughout their childhood, they should be tested annually so problems can be picked up early," says chairperson of the HPCSA Vanessa Moodley.
