During the early hours of Sunday morning while patrolling in Langa, police officials of the Maitland dog unit saw a white BMW vehicle with three people inside of it travelling at a high speed along Washington Drive.

The officers then followed the car and one of the passengers fired several shots at the police who then returned fire.

“On the corner of Washington and Brenton Way the driver of the car lost control and came to a standstill.

One of the suspects who fired at the officials jumped out of the vehicle and fled on foot but the police managed to arrest the other 19-year-old suspect,” says police spokesperson Captain Randall Stoffels.

When the officers approached the car they found the driver inside with a gun shot wound to his back. Stoffels says the vehicle is believed to have been hijacked earlier in the Pinelands area.

“Police are investigating charges of attempted murder and armed robbery. The 19-year-old suspect is scheduled to appear in the the Athlone Magistrate’s Court on Tuesday," says Stoffels.
