Survivors of the fire that occurred at the Wag ‘n Bietjie informal settlement near Strand on Sunday are being relocated to community halls until an alternative site has been prepared for them.

The fire destroyed more than 400 homes and the City of Cape Town says it is preparing to relocate the 1800 residents.

“The circumstances at Wag ‘n Bietjie is very tragic and unfortunately the people have been victims of politics that has happened over many years,” says the Chairperson for Helderberg, Councillor Demi Dudley.

The informal settlement in Strand is on the City’s housing list of 222 informal settlements and has been identified as one of the settlements with high risk conditions.

On Monday some of the fire victims invaded private land near their previous homes and blocked the N2 highway.

“Community leaders were kept constantly informed about the City’s plans to help them and the progress that was being made,” says Dudley.
