The Government says it supports Eskom’s decision not to go ahead with plans for more nuclear power plants at this stage as it is not affordable.

Government Spokesperson Vimla Maistry says Government is comfortable that the decision will not affect the national security of power supply given the plans that are already in place to meet demand.

Maistry says in view of the global economic meltdown, Government must ensure that Eskom does not over extend its balance sheet. However, Government remains committed to investigating the possibility of nuclear power over a period of time.
