Teachers and organisations opposing the proposed closure of 27 schools marched to the Western Cape Legislature earlier today.

Thousands gathered and  among them were , ANC Youth League (ANCYL) and the South African Democratic Teachers' Union (Sadtu).

Earlier this year, the Western Cape Education Department announced that it wants to close down underperforming schools, many of which are in poorer and under priviliged communties.

The department said most of the schools have dwindling numbers and they do not have adequate resources to provide a full curriculum, hence the reason for wanting to close down these underperforming schools.
