The Western Cape MEC of Transport and Public Works Robin Carlisle said it is concerning to see that road deaths in the province is on the rise.

A mid year-review of the deaths has shown that the rate at which they are decreasing is at its lowest compared to other years.

This year, road deaths have only decreased by 1 percent compared to the first six months.

Ministerial Spokesperson Sipheshile Dube said the number of deaths per 100 000 of the population in the province has gone down from 33.05 in 2008 to 23.80 currently.

The report has also revealed that pedestrians remain the hardest hit followed by those inside a vehicle, namely drivers and passengers.

Dube added that with the absenteeism of the breathalyzer and the Name and Shame campaign has had an effect on the figures.
