Today, United States of America Global Aids Coordinator, Ambassador Eric Goosby declared that that an additional $10 million to support voluntary medical male circumcision.
This amount increases the total support to South Africa ’s Medical Male Circumcision program to $46 million for the 2013 financial year.
The program is strategic investment scientifically proven to reduce men’s risk of becoming infected with HIV.
Goosby explained that three studies were conducted, showed that a 60% drop in the risk of acquiring HIV for the HIV negative male; it was something that had to be verified two more times after it was demonstrated, it wasn’t an intuitive finding but scientific.
“We have subsequently looked at what exactly really determines that; a layer of cells in the uncircumcised penis that have many receptor sites for CD4 and give the virus an advantage to attaching and infecting those cells, and those cells move into the entire immune system” Goosby added.
