The MEC for Education in the Western Cape Donald Grant said teacher development and training, in language and mathematics remains a key component of the provincial strategy for education.

Grant on Tuesday visited the Crawford Campus of the College of Cape Town, where he told educators that are currently participating on the training programme for language and mathematics, that language and mathematics impacts on the delivery of the curriculum to the learner.

Ministerial Spokesperson Bronagh Casey explains that as a department they made a commitment in 2009 to improve the language and mathematics skills of the learners.

“And while we have made some significant progress in improving language and mathematics, we do still have some tough challenges ahead and therefore we do have a language and mathematics strategy in place to deal with the improvement of our learner’s skills in language and mathematics as it is so important,” added Casey.

She also added that by improving their performance in the foundation phase then it can improve retention rates in all grades and also ultimately produce better outcomes in the national senior certificate.

Casey also said that they appreciate all the support from all the teachers at all the training programs throughout the holiday period  .
