Two people were killed and eleven others were critically injured in an accident in Pietermaritzburg this afternoon.

It is alleged that a minibus taxi lost control on the R614 and rolled into a river near Pietermaritzburg.

The exact details of the accident are not known at this stage and the police are investigating.

Netcare Limited Spokesperson Chris Botha explains that when the paramedics arrived there they found the taxi partially submerged and police divers were called in.

Botha added that it was found that two females had tragically died before their arrival, four people were seriously injured and seven escaped with minor injuries.

He also said that they were all treated on scene and then transported to various hospitals for further medical care.
