E-hailing driver bumps woman in Elsies River; SAPS came under attack

Police came under attack in Clarke Estate, Elsies River, on Sunday, as residents in the area were furious purportedly after an e-hailing driver bumped a woman. It is understood the driver tried to evade the area on fear of being robbed.

Police said a woman walked into a vehicle belonging to an e-hailing driver. The community started to attack the driver, by which he ran away, and the community started to damage his vehicle.

‘’According to reports, [the] incident happened on Sunday, 2024-09-08 at about 12:30 in Donegal Avenue, Connaught Estate, where an e-hailing driver was requested for a ride at the mentioned address. Allegedly, when he arrived a woman walked into the vehicle, and the community started to attacked the driver. He ran away, and the community started to damage his vehicle,’’ said Captain F.C van Wyk, Western Cape police spokesperson.

‘’On police arrival they had to request for re-enforcement because the community pelted them with bricks and stones. One SAPS vehicle was damaged and a case of malicious damage to property and an attack on police were registered for investigation. Members on the scene took action to disperse the crowd. The members on the scene contacted a breakdown to tow the e-hailing vehicle from the scene,’’ he added.

Van Wyk said no arrest has been made. Police appealed to the owner of the vehicle and the woman to come forward to open criminal cases to be investigated.
