Police wrongfully arrested over 4,000 people during the last financial year

Police have wrongfully arrested more than 4,000 individuals between April 2023 and March 2024, as revealed by Police Minister Senzo Mchunu in response to questions from MP Rise Mansi.

The South African Police Service recorded 4,135 wrongful arrests during this period, averaging 11 per day. These incidents have led to the state facing lawsuits exceeding R2.2 billion.

MP Makashule Gana, a member of the police portfolio committee, emphasised the need for an investigation into the currency and causes of these wrongful arrests, which undermine public trust in law enforcement.

He proposed that the issue be prioritised on the committee's agenda for necessary intervention.

Police ministerial spokesperson Kamogelo Mogotsi acknowledged that this situation is unacceptable and requires a comprehensive review.
