The Democratic Alliance says it is “horrified” at the number of South African Police Service officials being murdered.
According to recently released figures the number of police members being killed has increased by 13.7 %.
“It is important to realise that when a SAPS member is killed, it has negative implications for a wide number of people, the victims’ family who have lost a loved one and sometimes also the sole breadwinner as well as the community who have lost a law enforcement official,” says DA spokesperson Dianne Barnard.
She says that the family of the victim only receives a once-off payment, but if the police member was not wearing a bullet proof vest, the family would not receive money at all.
“This year the DA asked the Minister how many suspects in police murders had been arrested and convicted, and the Minister was not able to provide the requested information,” says Barnard.
