On Monday five men aged between 29 and 57 years old from Mitchells Plain and Mannenberg, were arrested in Comorant Street in Mitchells Plain on charges of pointing a firearm and possession of unlicensed firearms and ammunition.
“Police members attached to Mitchells Plain SAPS were on patrols when they spotted a Nissan Sentra in Spine Road and pulled it off,” says police spokesperson, Constable Siphokazi Mawisa.
Mawisa explains that whilst the SAPS members were approaching the vehicle, the suspects drove off in the direction of Weltevreden Road and police gave chase.
“It is alleged that the suspect in the passenger seat pointed a firearm at them and police fired a warning shot. No one was injured during the shooting,” says Mawisa.
She adds that at Comorant Street, police apprehended the suspects and confiscated two firearms (9mm and 38 revolver) and ammunition.
“The five men are being detained at the Mitchells Plain police station and are scheduled to appear in the Mitchells Plain Magistrates court soon,” says Mawisa.
