All movement from the new Green Point Stadium will see motorists and pedestrians who use the roads in the vicinity having to divert to alternative until approximately December next year.

This follows the start of the City of Cape Town’s construction on the R68,4 million Granger Bay Boulevard project between Main Road and Beach Road.

According to Henry du Plessis, the City of Cape Town City’s Director of Roads and Stormwater, the construction period for the project is approximately 19 months. The entire traffic circle at the intersection with Western Boulevard will also be reconstructed to enable pedestrian access to and from the adjacent new stadium.

While this is being done, Western Boulevard traffic will be diverted along a temporary road which passes between the circle and Main Road. The link to Main Road and the link to Fritz Sonnenberg Drive will be closed during construction. A new intersection will be provided on the Sea Point side of the circle which links Main Road, Western Boulevard and Vlei Road.

Traffic passing through the area will only be affected to the extent that they will now travel on a temporary deviation past the circle instead of through it. Destinations on the northern side of Western Boulevard will be accessed via a new intersection opposite Vlei Road while the circle is being reconstructed.

"While this project is part of the City’s Transport Plan, the FIFA 2010 World Cup tournament has been the catalyst that has enabled us to expedite its implementation," says du Plessis.

"It is just one more example of how the tournament is enabling the City to speed up delivery of services that will benefit Capetonians as a whole, but the residents of Green and Sea Point in particular."
