According to the Labour Minister, Membathisi Mdladlana, the taxi industry needs to be subsidised because a bulk of the workers in this country are using taxis to commute to the workplace.

Mdladlana had an exclusive interview with Bush radio yesterday evening after a press briefing. Some of the issues he tabled include Employment Equity, Sectoral Determination of salaries in the hospitality industry and the Skills Development progress.

He says the taxi industry is a very complex industry, “if we are able subsidise buses and trains, why can’t we subsidise the taxi industry”.

When it comes to the Sectoral Determination of salaries in the taxi industry, the minister said the difficulty is the enforcement mechanisms in the industry. “We are gonna need the co-operation of the workers in the industry and trade unions that operate there”, he said.
