Members of Parliament has stood up and condemned xenophobic violence after recent attacks that have been taken place in Alexandra and Cleveland in Gauteng.

They have called for tighter border control and tougher refugee laws due to the high incursion of illegal immigrants in the country and are urging all South Africans to tolerate fellow Africans.

“Poor South Africans feel that foreigners are stealing desperately needed resources from them, like jobs and houses, and tend to hate them,” says Democratic Alliance MP Sheila Camerer.

The recent attacks which took place in Alexandra is believed to be sparked by South Africans having to compete for scarce resources and against the continuing flow of foreigners into the country.

Parliament says it would send a delegation to Alexandra to assess the damage caused.

In the latest attack on Sunday morning five people were killed in Cleveland and hundreds of houses have been damaged and looted.
