24/7 Toll free alcohol and drug helpline

The City of Cape Town will be launching a 24/7 toll-free helpline for people affected by alcohol and drugs on Wednesday.

“Alcohol and drug abuse has reached crisis proportions in the Cape metropole – with devastating effects on the lives of thousands of Capetonians,” says Executive Deputy Mayor, Grant Haskin.

Alcohol abuse will cost this province over R1 billion in the next financial year according to the Medical Research Council (MRC).

The City recognizes that this, together with the increase in methamphetamine (tik) and heroin use affects citizens, businesses and tourists alike; and that very often people don’t know who to contact for practical assistance.

In a 2004 MRC study on heroin use it was reported that there were in excess of 15 000 heroin users in Cape Town.

“Very often people don’t know where to turn when they or a family member have a problem. The City’s Alcohol and Drug helpline is not a counselling service, but it will offer a confidential practical information and referral service, so that each caller is provided with the best way forward for their individual circumstances,” says Haskin.

The 24-hour helpline, 0800 help 4 u will be manned by eight professionally trained call operators - two per shift - working from a central call centre in Wale Street.
