AfriForum Youth says it welcomes the announcement by the Minister of Higher Education, Dr Blade Nzimande, that the funding framework for universities will be revised and that possible ways to reward excellence at these institutions will be considered.
However, the organisation added that the framework should not only reward good education, but also promote it.
“The current funding framework does not make provision for multilingualism and consequently institutions like the University of Pretoria and North-West University do not receive any additional funding, even though they want to promote three of the country’s official languages”, AfriForum Youth said in a statement.
AfriForum Youth National chairman Ernst Roets says proposals with regards to this will be made to the Minister in January 2011.
