Family members of the girl from Lavender Hill, who was murdered, described her death as brutal.

Eight-year-old Savannah Mersin was laid to rest last Saturday after her body was found in a shallow grave in Muizenberg.

Her aunt Katrina Coetzee said that autopsy reports showed she could have been smothered during her murder.

Coetzee added that the little girl was unrecognisable when the family had to identify her body.

She added that her face looked completely different to the Savannah they knew.

She also said whoever killed her did not have a heart.

Coetzee said the death of Savannah has left a gaping hole in the family.
