A train in Brackenfell caught alight this morning causing major disruptions of numerous trains operating between Muldersvlei and Bellville.
Acting Regional Manager Eddie Chinnappen said a high tension wire hook-up sparked an electrical fire on the train. The incident damaged the middle motor coach.
The City’s Fire and Rescue dispatched two fire engines and one rescue vehicle to the scene and managed to contain the blaze.
Chinnappen added that an investigation is underway to establish the cause of the incident and the extent of the damage.
Contingence plans were put in place by Metrorail, one line has been opened at Brackenfell.
