The Western Cape government has called for calm in rural farming areas of the province, following the violence which accompanied the farm workers' strike this week.

Protestors ran amok in at least 16 towns, mainly in the Hex River Valley, Witzenberg, Overberg and Breederiver Winelands regions, in demand of a daily wage of R150 while their employers are offering R80.

Provincial Health Minister, Theuns Botha, met with various role players in the Eden District Municipality in George.

Meanwhile the ADHOC group says the volatile events of the past few days in the Western Cape are the consequences of a national government who have failed to provide statesmanship and responsibility.
