The Democratic Alliance on Thursday visited the Lefathleng settlement in the North West , whereby they saw that there were extensive water and sanitation shortages in the community.
DA MP of Human Settlements Stevens Mokgalapa said the municipality claimed it was not aware of the water and sanitation shortages, despite numerous protests in the past.
Mokgalapa said that the there is definitely a serious need for intervention, the municipality has failed in its duties, has failed in service delivery and in caring for the people.
“Because of what I’ve seen is quite horrific and horrible to think that poor elderly people can not have access to water and not have access to their basic dignity which is sanitation,” added Mokgalapa.
He further explains that he will be writing to the Human Rights Commission to have this matter investigated further.
