The South African Human Rights Commission said it is concerned about the increase in incidents of corporal punishment in schools across the country.

SAHRC Spokesperson Isaac Mangena said through the complaints it has received it has also noted instances where the violence committed by educators against learners, extends far beyond the field of the definition of corporal punishment.

Mangena said there is a need to inform strategies that aim to eradicate the scourge of corporal punishments.

He added that the commission hopes that the meeting is one of the many that will come because there were about 2000 incidents of corporal punishment that were reported.
