The Western Cape Department of Health says to date 56 percent of Grade 4 girls have been vaccinated against Human Papilomavirus related cervical cancer.

The department has embarked on the HPV vaccine campaign for Grade 4 girls who attend a government or special education school in the province.

Provincial Department Spokesperson for the Cape Winelands Jo-Anne Otto said vaccination remains one of the most effective manners in which to prevent illnesses in children.

Otto said that there have been three cases of advent events. In all of these were related to nervous reaction at the thought of having an injection the worst of which was a bit vomiting and nausea by one of the patients.

She concluded by saying that parents should note that only girls who receive the first dose of the vaccine will also receive the second dose.
