Department of Social Development rolls out its Winter Readiness programme

The Western Cape Department of Social Development has started rolling out its Winter Readiness programme.

MEC Albert Fritz said the onset of winter should not mean that the destitute must suffer from the cold and harsh weather.

This is why the department is providing support to NGO’s in order for them to provide additional mattress space, food, blankets and toiletries to vulnerable citizens over this winter period.

Fritz said we have made sure that all our shelters are okay for any persons in need of accommodation during this period but we will also be rolling out our emergency and Disaster Risk Management kits.

“We will also do our nutrition programme where people can get a hot meal on any day at any one of our service centres during this winter. We urge people to make use of the services available from the Department of Social Development and please protect themselves from the harsh winter we have already,” Fritz added.
