The National Union of Mineworkers has expressed shock, disgust and sadness by Harmony Gold’s intention to retrench three-thousand-and-forty mineworkers at its Doornkop operation.

Acting NUM National Spokesperson Livhuwani Mammburu said, the union has requested the Minister of Mineral Resources Ngoako Ramatlhodi to intervene immediately to stop this drastic action by the company that will leave hundreds of mineworkers in a dire situation.

Mammburu says we experiencing serious job cuts at Doornkop mine. We received section 189 from the company which was really telling us that the company intends to put Doornkop mine and the Metrological plant on maintenance that is going to affect about 3 600 jobs.

As NUM we are totally rejecting and denying the retrenchments of employees.

“We are going to challenge that, and already we wrote a letter to the Minerals and Resources department seeking its intervention”, Mammburu added.
