Deadline for the City’s renaming process emerges

The City of Cape Town says residents are continuing to respond in large numbers to the second stage of the city’s discussion on the renaming of local streets, public places, natural areas and council owned buildings.

“The deadline for responses is August 22, and those received so far are being collated before being considered by the panel experts that will convene early in September,” says Councillor Owen Kinahan.

He says after residents have completed their deliberations they will forward them to council for a final decision.

“A publicly nominated, multi-disciplinary panel of experts was appointed by the City to evaluate the proposals submitted,” says Kinahan.

The original 236 proposals which were received by the council were narrowed down by the panel to 39.

“Residents are invited to comment on the short list proposed by the panel via the City’s website or by using the official forms which are available at the 23 sub-council offices,” says Kinahan.

Kinahan added that only responses that are submitted on the official forms will be eligible for further consideration.
