ANC takes control of Drakenstein and Knysna Municipalities

Seven council members have crossed the floor to join the African National Congress in the Drakenstein Municipality. This move will mean that the Democratic-Alliance is no longer in power in Drakenstein municipality. In the Knysna Municipality, the ANC will have an absolute majority.

Six council members are coming from the Independent Democrats and one was an independent member.

According to ANC spokesperson Garth Strachan, some members couldn’t work with the Independent Democrats because it was a party, ‘which is racist in character and which is entirely undemocratic’.

"I feel that this party carries the best interest for the entire South African community," said new ANC-member Claud Julies.

ID spokesperson Izak Janner stated that the ID feels betrayed: "It is nonsense. We don’t operate as unprofessional as they (the members who crossed the floor) say we do."

Another new member, Wilhelm Northnagel said, "I am relieved to be out of the ID furthermore I believe that I will spend the rest of my political career in the ANC. The ID has become a party with no proper leadership and has subjected itself to unscrupulous tactics, which has become too much for me to tolerate."

The ANC has welcomed the councillors as full members of the ANC.
