The National Sea Rescue Institute was activated by the National Ports Authority following a report of a boat caught on a reef 50 metres off-shore, on Saturday, between Greenways and Habour Island, Gordans Bay, with persons reported to be trapped.
“The metro, ambulance and rescue services and Cape Town fire and rescue, the police and the NSRI from Gordans Bay responded,” says NSRI spokesperson Craig Lambinon.
According to the 2 men on board they had experienced engine failure and as the light faded their vessel drifted into the wave line and got washed onto the reef, adds Lambinon.
“Our eight NSRI rescue swimmers went out to their assistance, managed to get them off the boat, they weren’t injured, brought them back to shore.
The boat was laying about 50 metres off shore and today the owner is going to decide on a few salvage options,” says Lambinon.
