According to the Democratic Alliance, three thousand kilometres of South Africa’s national road network, which are badly in need of maintenance, will be neglected over the next five years. These roads, which have an estimated structural life of only five years, will eventually become unusable.

“The maintenance backlog of national roads currently stands at 5300 kilometres. However the DA has learnt that the budget allocation for the maintenance of national roads for the next five years is R13.2 billion and the cost to repair all the roads is R30.2 billion rand,” says spokesperson for the DA Marike Groenewald.

The Department of Transport has stated that it will only be able to address the maintenance of 2300 kilometres of road in this period. This means that 3000 kilometres will not be maintained.

According to the DA the disrepair of the national roads system is a result of a lack of government commitment and inadequate funds for road maintenance. The increasing numbers of heavy trucks, which shorten the life span of roads, also plays a role.
