Possible assassination attempt on editor

By Marthe van der Wolf

It appears that there was an assassination attempt on Estee Booyens, the editor of the Afrikaans daily tabloid Noord-Son, during the early hours of August 29.

Booyens and her husband, photographer David Wessels, were woken at 1.30am by a shot fired through the window of their farm home at Muldersdrift. The bullet smashed into Estee Booyens’ pillow.

Suspicion that the motive was either assassination or a death threat was aroused when the attackers made no attempt to enter the house or take anything. The car that was in the driveway and goods in boxes on the stoep were left untouched.

Since the shooting Media24, the publishers of Noord-Son, have hired bodyguards for the editor. She’s also staying in a ‘safe house’ and a private detective has been called in to investigate the incident.

The South African National Editors’ Forum (SANEF) expressed its deep alarm. It is concerned that anger directed at the media may be taken to extremes.
